Well, of course we have birds at the farm, but what kind of birds? A fellow volunteered to help identify birds and yesterday, a walk through the farm revealed 10 bird species.
He identified:
- 1 Great Blue Heron
- 1 Northern Flicker
- 2 Steller’s Jay
- 4 Western Scrub-Jay
- 30 Barn Swallow
- 1 swallow sp. (Tree or Violet-green.- skimmed the pond and was gone before ID)
- 3 Black-capped Chickadee
- 2 Red-breasted Nuthatch
- 10 European Starling
- 1 Spotted Towhee (heard only)
- 3 Lesser Goldfinch
We will keep building the list of birds we’ve observed at the farm, because part of managing the soil, water, and habitat resources is knowing what species may be impacted by our actions. That knowledge helps us choose what, when, and where we can implement actions on the land without significantly impacting natural resources.
